Today, metal coatings come in a variety of colours, textures and patterns and as companies continue to create innovative and technologically advanced solutions, it is no surprise that the basis of their success stems from PVDF resin-based coatings. Wherever you live in the country or whatever your profession, PVDF coatings can become part of your life without you even knowing it. From barns and storage sheds to arenas and skyscrapers, exterior metal panelling all over the world is covered in PVDF coatings. So, what are PVDF coatings and how have they become an industry staple?

What are PVDF coatings?

PVDF coating (polyvinylidene fluoride) is the best organic coating available, offering excellent colour retention and corrosion resistance. Made from 70% fluorocarbon resin and 30% acrylic resin with special weathering pigments, PVDF uses fluorocarbon resin as the main film-forming material and is the ideal protective coating for steel, aluminium and other metal building panels. Its service life is up to 25 years under normal conditions. It is also suitable for use in highly corrosive environments.

PVDF coated aluminium coils are specially processed through the technics of roller coating and baking with precise paints from Akzo Nobel N.Vi, PPG, Becker Industrial Coatings.

Compared to conventional painting, PVDF coatings offer better weather resistance and superior resistance to corrosion, UV, contamination and scratching. It retains its colour after 20 years outdoors. In addition, it is available in a wide range of colours. PVDF-coated steel sheets are therefore mainly used in public buildings, such as airports, commercial or office buildings, sports stadiums, as well as buildings in harsh environments, such as industrial plants, power plants, steel mills, chemicals, grain silos, etc.

1. Gloss range

Gloss range refers to the sheen or gloss level of a paint finish. Metallic coatings are available in a range of gloss options, ideal for different applications. Most PVDF formulations use a standard gloss level.

2. Excellent colour retention

Inorganic pigments combined with high quality resins determine the colour, vibrancy, durability and aesthetic qualities of the finished coating. Pigments are a key component in coatings and can create any colour imaginable for metal buildings.

3. Excellent weather resistance

The PVDF coating contains 70% fluorocarbon resin with a large number of F-C bonds,, which determines its superb stability. It therefore has excellent resistance to weathering by UV, moisture or temperature. Its surface will not chalk or fade after more than 20 years of outdoor use.

4. Excellent resistance to high and low temperatures

PVDF coatings are applied to metal at temperatures above 200°C and to the lower surface using EP epoxy resin in powder form thermosetting resin, which can be used at 150°C. The resin layer is free from peeling, heaving, cracking, peeling and breaking after 10 freeze-thaw tests. The coating can be used for a long time in the temperature range of -60℃ to 150℃.

5. Film integrity and coating adhesion quality

A defining characteristic of PVDF coatings is their erosion rate, or the amount of time it takes for the coating to degrade. the relatively low erosion rate of PVDF coatings is an important factor in their advanced colour and design life. the adhesion of PVDF coatings is dependent on the strength of the primer adhering to the substrate. The primer is designed to form a strong bond with the PVDF topcoat, helping to resist the stresses of forming and weathering.

PVDF coatings lead the way in UV resistance of any polymer used in coatings today, providing an eco-friendly way to resist the sun’s heat absorption. PVDF coatings not only help reduce energy cooling costs and make interior spaces more comfortable, but they do so without sacrificing durability, performance or aesthetics.

6. Maintenance-free self-cleaning performance

PVDF coating surface energy is extremely low, the surface dust can be self-cleaning by rainwater. In addition, its maximum water absorption rate is less than 5% and the minimum coefficient of friction is 0.15 to 0.17. Therefore, it will not adhere to dust and oil and dirt.

As we can see from the list above, PVDF coatings offer many benefits that make them perfect for protecting metal building products and providing a vibrant finish for buildings long into the future.
