According to a 2011 study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, there are over 143,000 propane powered vehicles in the United States. High octane rating, relatively low cost compared to gasoline, low maintenance and low emissions are just a few of the factors contributing to the increasing popularity of LPG as an alternative fuel source.
Propane powered vehicles can either be equipped with a dedicated system where propane is only used, or with a bi-fuel system combined with gasoline. Both systems operate using an internal combustion spark-ignited engine.
This illustration shows a heavy duty truck with a dedicated LPG fuel system. Though LPG can be used in a wide variety of applications, heavy trucks needing increased fuel range can greatly benefit from a bi-fuel conversion system. Components for a bi-fuel LPG truck compared to a dedicated LPG truck are very much the same with the addition of a fuel switch, additional tanks, sensors and fuel injectors.
